Unbreakable Spirit: Phishan’s Journey of Survival:
Fishan was rescued by Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development (HERD) in 2002 from Zimbabwe, where he had experienced violent land grabs. Sadly, most of the elephants in the area did not survive such brutality, resulting in the loss of approximately 60% of wildlife in private game reserves and preserves. Fortunately, Fishan and his herd found safety at Kapama, HERD’s headquarters.

A History of Pain: Orphaned and Forced to Flee:
As a calf, Fishan faced the tragedy of being orphaned and castrated due to an infection. Subsequently, he was forced to leave his home in Zimbabwe, adding to his already painful history. Despite these challenges, Fishan’s will to survive persisted.
The Peril of a Broken Leg:
Recently, Fishan suffered a severe fracture after unknowingly stepping into a hidden, water-filled hole. For elephants, a broken leg is incredibly debilitating since they heavily rely on their legs for support. Tragically, elephants facing such injuries often meet with euthanasia.

A Fighting Chance: Rescuing Phishan:
Determined to give Phishan a chance at recovery, our dedicated team worked tirelessly for 36 hours to help the four-ton elephant stand on its feet again. Months of extensive medical treatment, including X-rays, casts, and painkillers, followed. Phishan now endures a bowed leg, accompanied by a limp, painful swelling, and pressure sores. While the immediate danger has passed, we must ensure the quality of his remaining years.

Phishan’s Vital Role in the Herd:
Phishan plays an invaluable role in his herd, known as the Jabulani herd. He is regarded as a protective and sensitive spirit, assisting Tokwe, the motherly figure, in caring for the calves and maintaining order among the young bulls. Khansia, an albino elephant calf, sees Phishan as a father figure, and many others rely on him for strength and guidance.
